Transport strikes in Germany - March 2023

A wide ranging transport strike has been called for by unions in Germany on Monday 27th March. Ver.di and EVG union have announced a twenty four hour walk out of its members due to ongoing wage discussions. The two unions cover ground and security workers at German airports, harbor employees and highway workers as well as other transportation employment. EVG union covers railway workers throughout Germany.

Earlier today, Frankfurt airport issued a travel advisory on its official twitter account stating "Due to a strike by the German Union ver.di airport operations will be heavily disrupted at Frankfurt Airport throughout the day on March, 27. There will be no regular passenger flights on this day." 

Lufthansa also added that passenger transport will be disrupted "As this coincides with a public transport strike in Germany on Monday, March 27th, we will not be able to offer all passengers short-term solutions, and advise against traveling to the airports during the affected times."

Munich airport also advised the following "Due to all-day strikes, there will be no regular passenger and cargo traffic at Munich Airport on Sunday, March 26, and Monday, March 27, 2023"

Client Advisory: Airport Strikes in Germany

Verdi trade union (Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft) has announced that strike action will take place at seven German airports including Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Hanover and Bremen for 24 hours on Friday 17th February.

Ground service staff, public sector officials and aviation security workers are all represented by the union who are in the midst of negotiations regarding pay disputes. 

The strikes come ahead of a second round of public-sector pay talks on Feb. 22-23, Verdi said.

The strike action will impact air travel at all German airports, Frankfurt airport has stated on Twitter, "Due to a strike by Germany’s VER.DI union, operations at Frankfurt Airport will be heavily disrupted throughout the day on 17 February. Passengers are strongly advised to refrain from traveling to the airport. Connecting flights from FRA will also be affected by the strike"

Lufthansa has also communicated the following to its partners, "For Friday, 17 February, the trade union ver.di has called for a one-day strike at various airports in Germany. As the airports of Frankfurt and Munich are also affected, a large number of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Group flights are expected to be affected."

Following the warning strike announcement for Friday, Frankfurt Airport has strongly advised passengers against arriving at the airport. It will not be possible for operations to continue effectively in Frankfurt, the operating company Fraport announced Wednesday. 

"Due to a strike by Germany’s VER.DI union, operations at Frankfurt Airport will be heavily disrupted throughout the day on February 17. Passengers are strongly advised to refrain from traveling to the airport. Connecting flights from FRA will also be affected by the strike."
