Latest Update: Germany strikes and protests

  • According to bahnhof.de GDL (Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivführer) will be proceeding with strike action. "There will be massive restrictions on Deutsche Bahn's long-distance, regional and S-Bahn services throughout Germany from 10 January 2024  up to and including 12 January 2024"
  • According to bbc.com, farmers staged protests in Berlin yesterday. Tractors blockaded key roads. "Farmers in Germany are blockading roads in protest against subsidy cuts, with more than 500 tractors and trucks parked up by Berlin's Brandenburg Gate." Additionally it was reported that additional blockades were reported in Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony and Bavaria.

Strikes in Germany - Protests expected week commencing 8th Jan. 2024

Commencing on January 8th, 2024, considerable transportation disruption is expected. Throughout Germany protest action held in parallel by multiple groups of operators is expected to start on Monday. 

Protest action is expected by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL), the German Farmers' Association (DBV), the Federal Association of Road Haulage as well as Logistics and Disposal (BGL).

Delays can be expected across the country. This includes, but is not limited to, port operations, road transportation and rail freight operations. 

The length of the protests has not yet been disclosed, however, delays can be expected throughout the upcoming week.
