Mexico Import Duties on Non-Free Trade Agreement Tariffs

Client Advisory: Mexico Import Duties

Mexico’s Ministry of Economy has announced a series of temporary tariff modifications that will impact 392 product categories. These tariff adjustments range from 5% to 25% ad valorem to products originating from countries that are not party to Mexico's free trade or tariff preferential agreements.

Mexico has free trade agreements in force with 59 countries (which include those of the EU). Having so many countries excluded from the tariff increase, Chinese products, which account for 17.9% of imports, would be mostly affected.

This covers a variety of products including steel, aluminum, bamboo, rubber, chemical products, oils, soap, paper, cardboard, ceramic products, glass, electrical material, musical instruments, and furniture and more. This decree will come into effect from August 16, 2023, and will conclude on July 31, 2025.

Which goods will be affected?

The complete list of the HS Codes impacted by this change is available in the Official Mexican Gazette: Products from Chapters #28 to Chapter #96.
