International Air Freight News

  • The global market expansion faced headwinds from reduced activity in Africa and the Middle East during January 2025, following their exceptional performance in 2024, as African carriers grew at 15.9% and Middle Eastern ones at 26.2%, likely influenced by the Red Sea situation.
  • Global air cargo demand remained positive although at single digit rates, with most key trade routes recording gains. However, Africa-Asia, along with Middle Eastern pathways to Asia and Europe saw respective declines of 26.1%, 7.3%, and 3%.

International Ocean Freight News

  • Ocean carriers on the eastbound trans-Pacific trade are revising their rate expectations for 2025–26 service contracts due to concerns about the U.S. economy and declining spot market rates. 
  • Hopes for the resumption of Suez Canal transits by container lines have dimmed following escalating conflict between the US and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

U.S. Domestic Ground Freight News

  • Cargo theft reaching record levels, prompting calls for congressional action. Carriers and shippers urged congress to combat the issue by stepping up enforcement and creating a task force.
  • Trucking, railroad, and shipper representatives raised the alarm about the rise of cargo theft affecting U.S. supply chains during a congressional hearing last week.

Tariff Timeline

President Trump’s Actions on Tariffs

  • January 30, 2025 - President Trump announces tariff increases to go into effect on Mexico and Canada
  • February 1 - Executive Order set out increased tariffs on Mexico and Canada at 25% with effective date as Feb 4th
  • February 4 - Tariff increases delayed for 30 days, but China is assessed a 10% tariff increase, and de minimis imports at $800 or less remain duty free
  • March 4 - Tariff increases at 25% go into effect for Mexico and Canada and 10% tariff increase: 10% increase on Canadian energy resources  
  • March 4 - USMCA is still available for qualifying products until April 4, please note – 50% of products from Mexico and 38% of products from Canada qualify for USMCA
  • March 12 - All steel and aluminum will be subject to an additional 25% rate of duty (Section 232)
  • April 4 - USMCA is set to become ineffective against steel and aluminum and steel and aluminum derivatives set for tariff increase at 25%) 

Retaliatory Tariffs Responses

  • March 13 – Canada imposes 25% tariff on US goods, including steel, aluminum, and various consumer products
  • March 10 – China announced tariffs on US agricultural imports, including chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton
  • April 1 - European Union to announce its first phase of retaliatory tariffs
  • April 2 – India is set to announce tariff increases on US goods, including agricultural products
