February 1, 2021
Lunar New Year, which is also commonly called Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, celebrates the beginning of the New Year on the traditional Chinese calendar.
Lunar New Year 2021 falls on Friday, February 12, 2021.
The legal holiday is usually seven days long. It starts from the Lunar New Year's Eve to the sixth day of the first lunar month.
The official Chinese public holiday is likely to last from February 11th to February 17th. In some cases, the holiday period may allow for extended time off for workers. The Lunar New Year dates change every year because the festival is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. We advise getting prepared because many factories will shut down in China and other countries celebrating the lunar calendar.
The Spring Festival starts on Chinese New Year (February 12th) and ends on the Lantern Festival (February 26th).
As many manufacturing facilities close their doors to allow employees to enjoy the festive period, planning ahead can help you achieve maximum benefit to your air freight, ocean freight, and logistics schedule and cost.
Due to the decreased number of employees, on-site, production times may need to be extended. You will need to allow for not just longer production times but also an increased amount of time to receive your quotations.
Production slows down and orders begin to back up, factories, in general, will process orders from their regular clientele and will assign priorities to their most valued clients.
Crane Worldwide Logistics has a number of logistics solutions available to you, if your products allow for a longer delivery lead time, we can always find the best price for you via our ocean freight services, or if you need a faster shipping model, our China - Europe Rail Freight would be a great option may be of benefit to you as you due to the flexibility of various booking times according to the railway schedule.
We have strong relationships with our air freight partners if this is your preferred option. In addition, Crane Worldwide can offer a road freight service from China to Europe, a reliable trucking service can provide multiple benefits to your supply chain requirements.
With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to impact international trade around the world, the launch of the COVID vaccine impacting space availability as well as the airline industry in recovery mode from the impact of grounded flights and reduction in passenger traffic, we advise that you plan ahead for 2021.

As Lunar New Year approaches, or Spring festival as it is alternatively called, our team in China and across Asia are preparing for the holiday season. Many families reunite to celebrate the New Year festivities which means that factories close so that workers can travel across China, this is also known as the Spring festival migration due to the number of travellers each year at this time.
The COVID-19 pandemic may bring about changes to the usual migration periods. How long is Chinese New Year? Speaking with shippers this year, some workers will be travelling at the end of January and in general will return to work after the Lantern Festival on the 26th February. However, this year, it is also evident that some factories will remain open over the holiday period and will have skeletal staffing available to enable continuous production. Ground transportation is also available as less trucking capabilities will be available.
In past years, freight carriers have announced blank sailings in the latter part of the holidays. However, due to the shortages in ocean freight space, it is not yet clear if blank sailings will be at the same levels due to COVID-19. We expect them to be at a lower level than usual during the Lunar new year holiday period. We are here to help! Should you require logistics and freight support during the spring festival holiday period, reach out to the Crane Worldwide team.
Whether you are celebrating together or via a virtual celebration, we wish you a Happy Lunar New year of the Ox.
