What is CBAM?

CBAM is the EU's mechanism to put a fair price on carbon emissions embedded in imported goods. It requires importers to purchase certificates corresponding to the carbon price that would have been paid if the goods were produced under EU carbon pricing rules.

Current phase requirements

Exporters should quantify reported emissions, calculate direct and indirect emissions using approved methodologies, document the carbon price paid in the country of origin, register authorized CBAM declarants, and verify data through accredited verifiers.

Compliance checklist

Identify covered products, map supply chain emissions, collect production-process and energy-consumption data, register on the CBAM transitional registry, create an accredited verifier process, set quarterly reporting workflows, monitor exporter requirements, and document carbon prices paid in the country of origin.
